Green Cheek Conure Pricing:
As is standard in the avicultural industry our pricing is based on the bird’s colour, with the rarity and complexity of genetics being the leading factor. We believe all colours are beautiful and encourage you to let us guide your selection of bird based on individual personality traits that shine through in their first weeks of life. That said, we do certainly understand the variety of reasons a particular colour may be important to you and are happy to add your preference to our notes. Those with specific colour preferences may experience longer wait times for a bird from our aviary, as Mother Nature doesn’t always give us the colours we seek at any given time.

General Species Information
Why We Love Them!
There are few pets who will keep you laughing like a Green-Cheeked Conure. Cheeky, clownish, playful and cuddly, I know you’ll fall in love just like I did! Here are a few of my favourite things about this fun species:
- They LOVE to play, and will keep you laughing as they throw, swing and dangle from their toys.
- They love water and will gladly hop in with their human caregiver for a shower, or dunk head-first into their water bowl.
- They have such cute faces, and big expressive eyes.
- They come in a rainbow of beautiful colours, arguably the bird species with the most available colour mutations.
- Highly intelligent and easily trick-trained with just a bit of patience!
An average of 25cm in length, 65-75 grams in weight, Green-Cheeked Conures are big enough to feel like a “real parrot” on your finger, but small enough to be manageable as a first-time bird for a well-researched an prepared family.
In captivity, with good care and a proper diet, Green-Cheeked Conures can live up to 25 years, or possibly longer. Are you prepared for this long-term committment? Are you prepared to provide for your bird during potential future changes such as relocating, getting married, having a baby, going back to school or getting a new job?
Birds are the third most popular pet in the world, and yet the most likely to be rehomed. Please think carefully before committing to a new feathered family member, whether a Green-Cheeked Conure or other bird species.
Noise Level and Volume
Green-Cheeked conures are considered one of the quieter Conure species, however don’t be fooled — there is no such thing as a silent bird! Keeping their minds occupied with daily foraging opportunities, new natural toys that are easily destroyed (and therefore enjoyed!), and early training efforts in short sessions are key to a mentally-stimulated Conure who will be more content to relax. Bored Conures can quickly find ways to entertain themselves — screaming being one of their favourite options.
When considering whether a Conure is the right fit for your family ask yourself: am I prepared to dedicate 10-15 minutes every single day (even if I am super busy!) to come up with new and innovative ways to stimulate my bird’s mind? If so, you’re on the right track toward a happy relationship with your bird.
Diet and Nutrition
In our opinion, providing a high-quality and nutritionally balanced diet is the most important thing you can do to keep your bird healthy and extend his/her lifespan. Furthermore, many bird behaviour problems can be attributed, at least in part, to a poor diet. Start off on the right foot from Day #1 when you bring your baby home! Your Green-Cheeked Conure should be fed a staple diet of high-quality pellet (click here for our bird food recommendations). An individual bird will eat an average of 1-3 tbs of pellets per day, but you should provide more than you think they need, as we do not want them running out of food. Replace any soiled pellets, and refill the dish as needed. The birds will eat only the amount they need.
Several times a week (ideally once daily) you should be supplementing the pellets with a bowl of chopped fresh veggies, fruit and gains (we call this mixture “chop”, named for how it is prepared). CLICK HERE to see my “chop” recipe and a list of bird-safe foods you can find at your grocery store.
Conures love to learn! Training is the best way for all family members to bond with the bird, and maintain a good relationship long-term. Training sessions should be short! 2-3 minutes per session, once per day, is ideal! If you are spending longer than this training your bird he/she is likely to become bored or frustrated. Keep it short, and fun for both of you!
Some of my favourite Conure tricks include “spin”, “wave”, “roll over”, dunk a basketball, and ring a bell.
Children And Conures
Conures are wonderful pets for families or single caregivers. Children who are taught how to read and respect the bird’s body language, and who are supervised during interactions, often have great success with Green-Cheeked Conures in the family. If you have children under the age of 6 in the household, we recommend keeping a padlock or combination lock on the bird’s cage. Children are fascinated by birds and we have heard stories of youngsters opening the bird cage without supervision, resulting in either or both of them becoming frightened or injured. If used, padlocks or combination locks should be made of bird-safe metals.
Is Gender Important?
Both male and female Green-Cheeked Conures can make wonderful pets with the right care and training. Many times I have had families claim they are “only interested in a male” or “only interested in a female” for reasons they often cannot identify, and then end up falling in love with a bird of the opposite gender anyway! Keeping your mind open to both genders allows us at Welcome Wings Aviary to help you select the perfect bird for your family based on his or her individual personality traits, not gender.
That being said, if you have your heart set on a particular gender let us know and we’ll do our best!
Like many parrot species that originate in the South American rainforest your Green-Cheeked Conure will love to join you for a daily shower, if you’ll let them! They’ll happily stand in the mist with their eyes closed until their feathers are drenched! Purchase a special perch designed for this purpose using this link!
Our babies are weaned onto a healthy diet of pellets, seed, fresh fruit and vegetables. These babies are enjoying fresh corn, carrots, peas and green beans for lunch!
